Bishop John Barres presents diplomas to the graduates of Holy Trinity Diocesan High School.
Below are Bishop Barres’ remarks from the commencement exercises for Holy Trinity Diocesan High School Class of 2019 on May 29.
Holy Trinity Class of 2019:
In Rejoice and Be Glad, Pope Francis says: “Do not be afraid of holiness. It will take away none of your energy, vitality or joy…The Lord wants us to be saints and not to settle for a bland and mediocre existence…The Church needs passionate missionaries, enthusiastic about sharing true life. The saints surprise us, they confound us, because by their lives they urge us to abandon a dull and dreary mediocrity…Holiness is boldness, an impulse to evangelize and to leave a mark in this world.”
In Christ is Alive, his global address to the Youth and Young Adults of the World, Pope Francis does a passionate analysis of the holy and heroic young people of the Old Testament and the New Testament, including the young Jesus and the young Mary.
Pope Francis’ point in this inspiring biblical synthesis is that Young Adults are called to the adventure of heroic and courageous holiness not tomorrow, not ten years from now – but right now, in the present moment.
Class of 2019: You are being called to that heroic holiness right now as you say goodbye to your Trinity classmates and begin the next stage of your life.
Your educational path, your career path, your vocational path will be focused, centered and true to who you really are in Christ and your baptismal call to be a missionary disciple in the Catholic Church if you are radically faithful to the Word of God and the Body and Blood of Christ.
Psalm 119 says: “The Word of God is a light and lamp for my steps” in life to Eternal Life. Let the inspired Word of God be a light and lamp for your steps at Stony Brook University, Nassau Community College, Boston College, American University or wherever the Holy Spirit is leading you. Read, meditate, pray, contemplate and live the inspired Sacred Scriptures. (Pope Benedict XVI)
Be radically faithful to the Sunday Mass and stop into the campus ministry chapel at your University a few times a week to pray in silence before the Blessed Sacrament.
JRR Tolkien, the author of The Lord of the Rings and a passionate Catholic evangelizer, once wrote to his son: “I put before you the one great thing to love on earth: the Blessed Sacrament…There you will find romance, glory, honor, fidelity, and the true way of all your loves upon earth.”
The rhythm of the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist in our cosmic Catholic Mass, the rhythm of the Altar of Sacrifice, will animate and ignite every dimension of your life.
The Eucharist will be the “true way of all your loves upon earth” and the Eucharist will lead you to Heaven.
Always have a burning desire for Heaven and Eternal Life as you follow the unique Map of Heroic Holiness the Holy Spirit has charted for you.
God bless you and thank you for your commitment to the Adventure of Heroic Holiness!
