In his Motu Proprio, Vos Estis Lux Mundi (“You are the light of the world”), the Holy Father, Pope Francis, has announced measures that will further the protection of children and vulnerable adults, while holding bishops accountable for their actions.
The Diocese of Rockville Centre already has in place many of the measures called for in the Pope’s instruction, such as an accessible system for reporting abuse, including the sexual abuse of non-minors resulting from the abuse of authority, as well as claims against bishops and Religious Superiors. The direction is an affirmation and expansion of the initiatives to increase transparency and promote healing set forth in the US Bishops’ Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. The Charter has been long-adopted and long-followed by our diocese and many others across the United States. We welcome these initiatives from the Holy Father and are always committed to strengthening and enhancing our programs and policies to serve abuse victim-survivors and their families.
