On Saturday, September 30th, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will be host its 9th Annual Friends of the Poor Walk at Bethpage Community Park. This is a fantastic opportunity for people of all ages to come and assist their neighbors in need on Long Island by helping to fight poverty. Catholic High School Entrance Exam, Various locations

The Catholic High Schools of Long Island will hold an entrance examination for prospective students on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2017 at 8:30 a.m. at each of the 10 high schools in the Diocese of Rockville Centre. The exam is the first step in the process to apply to these schools. Open to current 8th grade students, the entrance exam is required for consideration to the following schools: Chaminade High School in Mineola, Holy Trinity Diocesan High School in Hicksville, Kellenberg Memorial High School in Uniondale, McGann-Mercy Diocesan High School in Riverhead, Our Lady of Mercy Academy in Syosset, Sacred Heart Academy in Hempstead, St. Anthony’s High School in South Huntington, St. Dominic College Preparatory High School in Oyster Bay, St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School in West Islip, and St. Mary’s High School in Manhasset. The exam provides objective data about students applying to Catholic high schools. It measures ability and achievement in reading, mathematics, and language. The schools use exam results to make decisions about applicants. Registration must be completed by Wednesday, Oct. 4. Accommodations may be made for extended time and/or enlarged print; such applications must be submitted by Friday, Sept. 29. Beginning in late September, each school will hold weekend Open House events staffed by administrators, faculty members, and students to describe school programs and answer questions. Stepping Out is a social group of men and women who have experienced the loss of a beloved spouse and feel it is time to enjoy the friendship of other widows and widowers. Our Lady of Consolation Nursing & Rehabilitative Care Center is offering Family/Caregiver Support Group Meetings. Caregivers are often so busy caring for others that they tend to neglect their own emotional, physical and spiritual health. These meetings are open to the community and are being held the second Tuesday of each month 3:30 pm – 4:30 pm in the Board Room of the Care Center in West Islip. Led by social workers from Good Shepherd Hospice and Our Lady of Consolation, each meeting will offer information regarding how to deal with stress/emotions, coping mechanisms, adjusting to new roles, caring for yourself, end-of-life issues, community resources, and all-around support.
