Dr. Kathleen Walsh, Ed.D., has submitted her resignation as superintendent of schools for the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Dr. Walsh has served as Superintendent since September 2015 and previously as assistant superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment.

In a letter to the People of God, Bishop Barres said: “Over the course of her career as an educator, she has served our children and worked to strengthen Catholic education on Long Island. I wish to thank Dr. Walsh for her dedicated service as superintendent and all her efforts on behalf of Catholic education on Long Island.

I am also grateful to Dr. Walsh for her leadership in steering the Department of Education, our principals and faculties through this most challenging time of the Covid-19 pandemic. Please join me in wishing Dr. Walsh well in all her future endeavors.”

Bishop Barres has accepted the recommendation of the Board of Trustees of the Education Corporation and appointed Dr. Denise Smith, Ed. D., as interim superintendent of schools until the Education Corporation Board can identify a permanent leader. Dr. Smith is an experienced and capable Catholic school administrator who has previously served as the principal of Saint Dominic High School, Oyster Bay, and Director of Curriculum and Professional Development at Saint Anne School, Garden City. She is also an Assistant Professor at Molloy College. Over the last year, Dr. Smith has been an integral part of the Morning Star Initiative Team, responsible for supporting key academic improvements.

Dr. Walsh has graciously agreed to continue supporting the Department of Education until December 31, 2020 to support a smooth transition of her duties.
