While good people may differ on one or another aspect of the New York State gun control legislation, I believe it is a sensible and helpful new law for the good of our communities and especially for safety of children in our schools and neighborhoods. Legislation like this is always the fruit of discussion and compromise. The chief virtue of politics is the virtue of prudence.

I congratulate those in the Assembly and Senate who worked together to do their best to achieve balance in the new law. All New Yorkers should be proud that the two branches of government worked together to pass legislation. It stands in contrast to the unilateral actions that seem to supplant the normal process of government in Washington these days.
