Southampton—On the feast of the Queenship of Mary, Bishop John Barres traveled to East End of Long Island Aug. 22 for an evening of prayer and fellowship with young adults in his continuing efforts to promote “Dramatic Missionary Growth,” his evangelization initiative, across the Diocese of Rockville Centre.

Nearly 100 people participated in the Millennial Missionaries 2017 event at the Basilica of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. The evening began with lawn games and a barbecue and was highlighted by Eucharistic adoration.

In addition to Bishop Barres, Auxiliary Bishop Nelson Perez, priests and deacons from diocesan offices and East End parishes were among the clergy in attendance. Members of the Knights of Columbus Southampton council joined parish staffers in preparing and serving hamburgers, hot dogs, farm-fresh corn and salads as the young adults dined and socialized with each other and their hosts.

Bishop Barres presided at the bilingual Holy Hour and preached the homily, which was translated into Spanish by Bishop Perez. The homily was live-streamed on the diocese’s Facebook page, where it remains available for viewing.
