Sea Cliff — To commemorate the 80th anniversary of the opening of St. Boniface Martyr School and the Sisters of Mercy of Dallas who taught there, the parishioners of St. Boniface Martyr Church here dedicated a statue of Mary, Our Lady of Mercy, on Sept. 14.
Following a Mass attended by graduates of the school as well as several Sisters of Mercy who taught at the school and in the parish religious education program, pastor Father Robert Romeo unveiled and blessed the statue.
In a letter inviting the Sisters of Mercy to the event, Father Romeo wrote, “Through the dedication and hard work of the (Sisters of Mercy), countless young people were not only educated in academics but were also able to deepen their faith in Jesus and the Church … Those who laid the foundation and others who built on that same foundation have made St. Boniface Martyr Parish the wonderful place that it is. The Sisters often go unsung for all they have contributed to the parish.”
Sister of Mercy Jeanne d’Arc, who served as principal of St. Boniface Martyr School for several years in the 1970s, thanked the parish on behalf of the congregation “for this beautiful and lasting tribute to the women of Mercy who came here 80 years ago. My prayer for this great parish is that you will be richly blessed in your people and your ministries of mercy and that Our Lady of Mercy, whom we honor today, will look upon you with great kindness and affection.”
