Boy Scout Troop 54 and the Holy Name Society of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Lindenhurst, held a “9/11 Remembrance Mass and Flag Honoring Ceremony” at the church on Sunday, September 8th.
Following the 8 a.m. Mass, the Scouts led the outdoor ceremony with a speech honoring all those who perished on that horrific day, followed by a flag honoring ceremony in which damaged and torn American Flags were burned according to the United States Code. The ceremony ended with the recital of our country’s Pledge of Allegiance, and the singing of our National Anthem and other patriotic songs.
After a blessing by Father John Sureau, Holy Name members Bob Little and George Walters spoke about the Sanctity of All Life and Pope Francis’ message of peace, along with the reading of a moving letter written by a Franciscan priest who spoke of finding Jesus in all of humanity. A “Steel Cross” found at Ground Zero, along with pictures of the towers, were also on hand. The Holy Name Society provided breakfast afterward.
