It was a dog day afternoon at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Greenlawn, on Sunday, Sept. 30 as about a dozen canines gathered with their owners to participate in a traditional pet blessing in advance of the parish’s patronal feast.

Notably, dogs were the only animals represented at a liturgy that typically attracts a variety of pets, including cats, birds, reptiles and other lovable creatures.

Father Paul Driscoll imparted a blessing on the assembly to open the service before Deacon Jean Cantave assumed the presider’s role, reading the prayers and blessing the pets and their owners with holy water.

The feast of St. Francis, patron of animals, is Oct. 4.
