This past Saturday over 400 people gathered at St. John the Baptist High School in West Islip for one of the high points of the Fortnight for Freedom. Thanks to the inspiring leadership of Barbara Samuells of Dix Hills, the Diocese of Rockville Centre and Catholics for Freedom of Religion sponsored gathering focused on the commitment to preserve and protect religious freedom in our country and around the world.
Barbara Samuells herself took over from Msgr. Jim Vlaun in the role of MC. Speakers included Bishop Andrzej Zglieszewski, Tom Renker, and young men and women from our Catholic schools and religious education classes who offered their reflections on religious freedom, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Awards were given to the winners of an art contest that demonstrated the talents of our young people who, with drawings and sculptures, expressed through art the importance of religious freedom.
Bishop Brennan opened the day with prayer and singing patriotic songs, it closed with the prayer of the Litany for Liberty. Outside in the warm summer sun, the day was completed with praying the rosary. Bishop Brennan will close the Fortnight for Freedom with Mass at St. Agnes Cathedral on Friday July 4 at 12:10 pm.
Congratulations to all who have made our Diocese the best in the country in observance of the Fortnight for Freedom.
