Elizabeth Jose, a Freshman at Sacred Heart Academy, Hempstead,  and Athena Cheung, a Junior at Sacred Heart Academy, won top honors in the prestigious Al Kalfus math competition at Hofstra University. Over 1,400 Long Island students competed by investigating mathematics projects and developing their own ideas which were presented orally before judges, peers, and parents. Athena won a Gold Medal for her work on the Applied Number Theory. Elizabeth won a Bronze Medal for her presentation on the Pythagorean Theorem.
