World Mission Sunday was celebrated October 18 at Holy Name of Mary, Valley Stream. The day included praying a Living World Mission Rosary in the gymnasium of Holy Name of Mary School with a mixture of students from the school and the religious education program and some members of the parish youth group. The children then lead the procession for the 1:15 pm Mass celebrated by Bishop Nelson Perez. The bishop was joined at the altar by Msgr. Romualdo Sosing, Holy Name of Mary pastor; Father Henry Reid, associate pastor and Deacon Clyde Ruggieri and missioners including Fathers Fernando Echeverri, Saúl Lodaño, MXY; Carlos Mario Urrego, Ken Sullivan, MM; David Guzman, MXY; Dominic Pinto and Deacon Francisco Cales, Diocesan Director Pontifical Mission Societies.
Singers from the Spanish, Filipino and Youth Choirs all performed and the first reading was delivered in Creole, the second reading in Spanish and the petitions in English, Spanish, Polish and Tongan.
Before Mass closed, Deacon Francisco Cales presented award recognitions to those schools and religious educations programs who participated in fundraising for the missions in 2014. Holy Name of Mary was the top earning school. Representatives from Sacred Heart Academy and St. Mary Religious Education, Manhasset, were all presented with awards. After Mass, there was a fellowship in the school cafeteria with the visiting missionaries.
