Young journalists and their mentors gathered recently for the 4th Annual Catholic high school journalism dinner at Kellenberg Memorial High School, Uniondale. The organizers of the program profess that a Catholic identity can be a strong voice in the media and that Catholic education may be the only place remaining to develop that voice.
The program began with a prayer service, featuring student participants and Kellenberg Memorial’s Gregorian Consortium providing music. Michael Rizzo, director of Journalism at St. John’s University, Jamaica, provided the keynote address and Sean Dolan, director of communications for the Diocese of Rockville Centre, provided closing remarks.
High school students from Chaminade, Sacred Heart Academy, Kellenberg Memorial and younger students from the Brother Joseph C. Fox Latin School, Our Lady of Peace and St. Martin DePorres elementary schools enjoyed dinner and a chance to develop their sense of Catholic identity and build fraternity among the news staffs.
Each high school also honored their Most Dedicated Journalist. This year’s honorees were Colin Maloney, The Tarmac, Chaminade; James Perrone, The Phoenix, Kellenberg and Felicia Binkis and Sara Hughes, The Cordette, Sacred Heart Academy.
