Bishop William Murphy presided at a funeral Mass Tuesday, September 17 at Our Lady of Mercy Church in Hicksville for Father Charles A. Gartner, who died September 12. He was 92.

Born in New York City November 9, 1920, Father Gartner was educated at Cathedral College, Brooklyn and the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception, Huntington, as well as La Valsainte in Fribourg, Switzerland. He was ordained May 31, 1958 in St. Agnes Cathedral.

Father Gartner served in Corpus Christi Church, Mineola; Our Lady of Lourdes, Massapequa Park; St. Christopher, Baldwin; Holy Spirit, New Hyde Park; and Our Lady of Mercy, Hicksville. He retired in 1995.
He is survived by nieces Rosemary Szinyava of Miami, Florida; Joann (Zarba) Lopez and her daughter Stephanie of Rocky Point; and Sister Bernadette Claps, S.B.S., of Marriottsville, Maryland; as well as a friend, Elaine Marzoli of Plainview.

Father Thomas P. Tuite preached the homily at Father Gartner’s funeral Mass. Burial followed at Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury
