Father John Patrick Murray, whose 45 years of priestly service included 18 years as chaplain at Nassau County Medical Center, died January 4. He was 83.
Born in Brooklyn on April 22, 1929, Father Murray was ordained for the diocese of Brooklyn on May 24, 1954. His first assignment was as associate pastor of St. Rose of Lima, Massapequa, from June 1954-January 1958. He then served briefly at SS. Cyril & Methodius Parish in Deer Park, before joining the faculty of St. Pius X Preparatory Seminary in June of 1958. He remained there until June 1964, when he became associate pastor at Holy Spirit, New Hyde Park. Parish assignments followed at St. Elizabeth, South Huntington (1965-70); St. Joseph, Babylon (1970-76); St. Ignatius Martyr, Long Beach (1976-79); and Our Lady of Mercy, Hicksville (1979-81). He served as chaplain at the Nassau County Medical Center from 1981 until his retirement in 1999.
Bishop William Murphy presided at a funeral Mass for Father Murray on January 10 in St. Albert’s Chapel at the Queen of the Rosary Mother House in Amityville. Burial followed at Holy Rood Cemetery, Westbury.
