Bishop John Barres presided at the Rite of Election liturgy at St. Christopher Church, Baldwin, on Saturday, Feb. 29, and at St. Anne Church, Brentwood, on Sunday, March 1. Sixty-four catechumens from 26 Nassau County parishes who are preparing to receive the sacraments of initiation (baptism, confirmation and first Communion) at the Easter Vigil participated in the service at St. Christopher’s, while 135 catechumens from 26 Suffolk County parishes participated in ceremony at St. Anne’s.
The Rite of Election, celebrated in cathedrals and churches around the world on the first Sunday of Lent, formally acknowledges the readiness of those members of the Catechumenate, or Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), who are journeying toward their complete intiation into the Catholic faith.
