Bishop William Murphy has invited all Catholics to join the Holy Father and the Church Universal in praying and fasting for peace in Syria and the Middle East on Saturday, September 7. “This is a day for Catholics for prayer and fasting wherever they may be,” said Bishop Murphy. “I am asking all Catholics to make some particular effort of prayer at home or in their parish church for peace during this grave time in Syria and the Middle East.”
Churches across Long Island will offer opportunities for communal prayer including celebrating the Mass for Peace, recitation of the Rosary, Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction.
Last Sunday, during the course of his remarks ahead of the traditional Angelus prayer, Pope Francis urgently called for a Day of Prayer and Fasting for Peace in Syria, the Middle East, and the world to be held on September 7, 2013, the vigil of the birth of Mary, Queen of Peace.
“On 7 September, in Saint Peter’s Square, here, from 19:00 until 24:00, we will gather in prayer and a spirit of penance, invoking God’s great gift of peace upon the beloved nation of Syria and upon each situation of conflict and violence around the world,” said Pope Francis.
