In Massapequa, St. Rose of Lima’s second grade class is learning to measure the length of objects by first using nonstandard units of measure and then progressing to using appropriate measurement tools. Beginning with the nonstandard unit of measure (a colored tile) the children build an understanding that repetition of the same size unit is used in the measurement of the object. The children then move on to standard units of measure beginning with the inch. They learn to measure using their school tools (glue sticks, crayons, pencils). To extend their exploration of measuring, they draw lines on a sheet a paper for a specific length.
